Portraits of a Pandemic documents the duality of life that the COVID-19 pandemic created among those with essential jobs and those staying at home. With the “Stay At Home” order from Governor Mike DeWine, life changed drastically for many people. Only the essential businesses remained open, while others were forced to close up shop. Many people were bound to their homes and restructuring their lives, while there was a whole workforce battling the pandemic and serving the community however they were able.
The focus came to represent the full breadth of the community throughout the tumultuous year. This collection is an abridged version. This started as a small passion project during the “Stay at Home” order with a plan to wrap up in May, when people went back to work and COVID numbers went back down. That didn’t happen. The pandemic evolved and so did this project. A summer full of COVID-19 cases and civil unrest led this series to become a more expansive representation of the community with many more stories to share.
Ultimately, Portraits of a Pandemic was created to build a virtual community and help its members feel seen, while also providing a silver lining by showing how others are weathering the pandemic. The underlying theme here is, “We Are All In This Together”.
